- A Brief History of the Perdido Beach
VFD
- Perdido Beach is a rural community located on
Perdido Bay, between Soldier Creek and Palmetto Creek. The Fire District
covers approximately twenty square miles. Our nearest store is about seven
miles away. The residents of Perdido Beach started planning for a fire
department in the mid 1960’s. They held many fish fry’s and bake sales. In
the late 1960’s they started to build the fire house. People would donate
material and labor for the new building. The building was completed and
dedicated in April 1970. Warren Day, the first Fire Chief leased a 1930’s
model fire truck from Fairhope Fire Department for $1.00. Later fire
apparatus was equipment on loan from Alabama Forestry. In 1982 we were
classified a Class 10 fire department. In 1983 we were upgraded to a Class 9
Fire Department. In 1982 the fire trucks were a 1970 Ford truck with a home
made 500 gallon water tank with a 250 GPM Gorman Rupp PTO driven pump and a
1958 Chevrolet truck with a home made 500 gallon water tank and a 400 GPM
Darley front mount pump. We later took the tank off the Chevrolet and
mounted it on top of the tank on the Ford to make a 1000 gallon tank. We
converted a Kenworth truck into a 2300 gallon tanker. In 1985 we were able
to purchase a used Pierce Mini-Pumper. This truck is still in use as a brush
truck. In 1989 we purchased a used custom 750 GPM pumper and refurbished it
ourselves. At the same time we bought another 750 GPM pumper from Panama
City, FL. Fire department. Both these trucks were financed by two of our
firefighters. In 1991 we asked ISO for a review and received a rating of
class 5/9. Later on we sold these two trucks and purchased two used Custom
built HAHN pumpers. After Katrina struck Mississippi we donated these two
trucks to the Pass Christian Mississippi fire department. In 2005 we were
able to purchase two new TOYNE Class A pumpers. Both trucks have a 1500 GPM
pump with 1000 Gallon water tanks, and foam capabilities. Also in 2005 we
requested ISO to review us. We ended up with an ISO Class four (4) rating
for all within five miles of our station. We’re very proud of this! All the
people over all the years worked very hard to have a good fire department.
We currently have: Two TOYNE Class A pumpers; Two 2000 gallon Deep South
tankers with 500 GPM pumps; Two Pierce Mini-Pumpers; A Service truck; A
Rescue/Medical truck; A crew-cab Command vehicle, and a Kawasaki Mule. We
run fire calls, Medical calls (BLS), Motor Vehicle Crashes, Search and
Rescue and provide public service to any one we can help
